All About Palm Beach
Palm Beach was largely founded by Henry Morrison Flagler in the early 1890s. Flagler, a co-founder of Standard Oil and owner of the Florida East Coast Railway, recognized the potential of the area and set about developing it as a luxury resort destination for the wealthy elite of his time. Flagler built the massive 1,100-room Hotel Royal Poinciana on the west side of the island, which was the largest wooden structure in the world and the largest resort at the time. A few years later, he built the equally grand Palm Beach Inn on the ocean side, renaming it The Breakers in 1901. Flagler’s wealth and connections allowed him to effectively market Palm Beach as a tropical paradise to the high society crowd. To service the influx of wealthy patrons, Flagler designed and built the town of West Palm Beach across the lake from Palm Beach, where servants and staff could live separately from the elite. Prior to this, servants had lived in the small area known as the “Styx” which was owned by the wealthy landowners.
The development of Palm Beach coincided with the rise of the “Jet Set” – the international elite who traveled between lavish homes and parties around the world. Many grand mansions were built in Palm Beach to be occupied for just a few weeks each winter after the holidays. At one point, Palm Beach’s 33480 zip code was ranked as the wealthiest in the United States. Architect Addison Mizner designed the distinctive Mediterranean-Moorish architectural style that became the signature of Palm Beach and continues to this day. Mizner also designed the famous Worth Avenue, now one of the premier shopping destinations globally. Palm Beach has been home to a veritable who’s who of the world’s rich and famous over the decades, including Marjorie Merriweather Post, Donald Trump, the Kennedy family, John Lennon, and many others. While the community has become more egalitarian on the surface, it remains an exceptionally wealthy enclave, with a proliferation of luxury homes, yachts, exotic cars, and high-end retailers.
Luxurious Homes in Palm Beach
Homes in Palm Beach re known for their grand, opulent, and architecturally significant designs. Many of the most prominent residences were built during the early 20th century as lavish winter retreats for the wealthy elite. One of the defining architectural styles in Palm Beach is the Mediterranean-Moorish style pioneered by architect Addison Mizner. These homes typically feature stucco walls, red tile roofs, ornate balconies, loggias, and courtyards. They often have an asymmetric, sprawling layout with multiple wings and levels. The average size of a Palm Beach estate home is around 10,000-20,000 square feet, though many are significantly larger. For example, the Mar-a-Lago estate owned by Donald Trump contains over 126,000 square feet of living space across the main mansion, guest houses, and other structures. Many of the palatial Palm Beach homes have elaborate floor plans that include grand foyers and entryways, numerous bedrooms (often 6-10 or more), multiple living rooms, sitting rooms, and entertainment spaces, formal dining rooms that can accommodate 20+ guests, gourmet kitchens with top-of-the-line appliances, lavish master suites with sitting areas, balconies, and oversized bathrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, putting greens, and other recreational amenities, guest houses, staff quarters, and caretaker’s cottages, boat docks, private beaches, and expansive manicured grounds. The level of detail, craftsmanship, and luxury finishes in these Palm Beach estates is exceptional, with extensive use of imported materials, custom millwork, and bespoke furnishings. Many homes also incorporate the latest smart home technologies and amenities.
